It's spring - the perfect time to add a new addition to your backyard! Aside from a sustainable egg supply, what benefits do chickens have for your family?
1. Fresh Eggs

The most obvious reason to get chickens is for farm-fresh eggs. Whether to avoid high grocery store egg prices or enjoy a fresher, healthier protein source, backyard chickens could be the answer.
Mother Earth News Study found that farm fresh eggs have less cholesterol and saturated fat than store bought eggs.
2. Minimal Space Requirements
Chickens have relatively minimal space requirements when compared to other livestock. Most will agree that 4 square feet minimum are needed for each chicken. If allowed to free-range throughout the day, most can get away with less than this for coop space.
3. Fertilizer
Chicken droppings make great compost! We utilize our chicken litter in our compost throughout the year and add to our vegetable garden in the spring. If free-ranging, your yard will receive these benefits.
4. Bug Control
Most chickens will happily spend their days eating bugs, worms, and small critters (the occasional mouse or frog). Though they are not as efficient as their guinea counterparts, chickens do a decent job.

5. Reduced Food Waste
Did you know one chicken can eat over 80 lbs of food scraps per year? From garden leftovers to the vegetables you forgot about in the refrigerator, chickens make a great alternative to traditional food waste.
5. Family Activity
A backyard flock is a great way to get the whole family involved in an outdoor activity! From learning responsibility to understanding where food comes from, a backyard chicken flock has endless positives for families with children especially.
We love our backyard flock and I love to welcome and support new chicken tenders!
